Oslo is known for its high-profile summer music festivals, and the Kollen Summer Festival – the newest festival to grace the Oslo scene – is certainly keeping up the high standards. Held 29th-30th June 2012 at Holmenkollen, home of the world-famous ski jump and museum (and site of the lively Holmenkollen Ski Festival), the inaugural festival has secured rock band KISS (in their only performance in Northern Europe in 2012) and pop superstar Rihanna as headliners - not bad for a debut programme.

Other performers on the 2012 roster (which features more than 20 acts over two days) include Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Alison Krauss & Union Station (featuring Jerry Douglas), Turbonegro, The-dream, Bjørn Eidsvăg, Katy B, Billy Idol, Raga Rockers, Kelis, Siverthøyem, Marit Larsen, Magnet, Vinni, Little Dragon, Christina Perri, Dreamon, LidoLido, Dev Svenska Björnstammen, Envy, and Team Me.

There’s something for every taste in music, and a good selection of both big name artists and lesser-known acts from both Norway and abroad. Plus, the festival offers a thoroughly unique location next to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump – the newest ski jump in the world, albeit on a site that has hosted ski jumping since 1892.

The site is also now home to a fascinating ski jump museum that is one of Norway’s most popular tourist attractions. The jump itself is the only one in the world made of steel, and features high-tech wind-protection, a cabin lift to the top and enhanced viewing facilities. It’s worth a visit on its own – combine it with an impressive music line-up, and it’s an opportunity not to miss!

Oslo is a great city to visit anytime of the year, but summer has a special charm, especially this time of year when the city is alive with festivals and events and the daylight seems to last forever. Book your accommodation and make travel arrangements soon, though – the city is a popular tourist destination, and many a hotel in Oslo books up quickly at this time of year.
